In the printing industry, CTP (Computer to Plate) technology has become the mainstream, significantly improving printing efficiency and quality. In the CTP platemaking process, CTP Developer, as a key chemical, directly determines the quality of image display and the service life of the plate.
What is CTP developer?
CTP developer is a chemical used for CTP plate development. Its function is to remove the uncured area after exposure to make the image structure clearly visible. Its chemical properties are directly related to the clarity of image development, the stability of the plate, and the compatibility of the entire platemaking system. Generally, CTP developer is composed of multiple chemical components such as alkaline aqueous solution, surfactant, corrosion inhibitor, stabilizer, etc.
Classification and performance characteristics of developer
1. Classification by development system
Traditional developer (post-processing required)
This type of developer is suitable for early CTP plates, and usually requires fixing and rinsing after development. The chemical composition is strong and has a greater impact on the environment, but the development effect is stable and has good compatibility with complex images.
Processless Developer
Also known as environmentally friendly developer or pre-coating treatment liquid. This type of product is mostly used with chemical-free CTP plates. It is environmentally friendly and non-toxic, does not require waste liquid treatment, and is driven by the trend of green printing.
2. Classification by plate type
Thermal CTP developer
Mainly used for thermal CTP plates, which need to be developed at a certain temperature. The developer needs to have high thermal stability and clear development ability.
Purple laser CTP developer
The CTP plate used for purple laser exposure requires strong selectivity for the exposed part and high development accuracy.
Key R&D factors of CTP developer
1. Chemical stability
The developer should have good chemical stability and be able to maintain the consistency of the development effect during long-term use to avoid precipitation, discoloration or reduced activity.
2. Development speed and selectivity
Too fast development speed is easy to corrode non-image areas, and too slow development speed affects production efficiency. The ideal developer should have excellent selectivity, only remove the unexposed part, and not damage the image area.
3. Compatibility and adaptability
With the diversification of CTP plate types and exposure equipment, developing a developer with wide compatibility has become the focus of research and development.
4. Environmental protection
One of the research and development trends of modern CTP developer is green and environmental protection, reducing or eliminating harmful substances (such as phosphates, heavy metals), and facilitating waste liquid treatment or recycling.
Technology trend: moving towards zero chemistry and intelligent management
Driven by green printing and intelligent manufacturing, the development of CTP developer is undergoing three major changes:
1. Processless technology
More and more CTP plate manufacturers are launching "processless" plates that do not require developer treatment, and directly remove non-graphic parts on the printing press. This greatly reduces the use of chemicals and processing procedures, but there are still limitations in high-precision printing.
2. Automated development system integration
Integrate the developer management system into the CTP output process to achieve intelligent operations such as automatic replenishment, concentration control, temperature management, and waste liquid treatment, and improve platemaking consistency.
3. Highly concentrated and low-pollution developer
In order to reduce transportation costs and environmental pressure, highly concentrated formulas have become a trend, and users can dilute them as needed. The formula is more environmentally friendly and more friendly to equipment and operators.
Especially in high-demand fields such as book printing, commercial printing, and packaging printing, higher requirements are placed on the three aspects of developer quality, environmental protection, and cost control, which also poses new challenges and opportunities to developer suppliers.
